The third feature film, based on the nostalgic game Super Mario Bros, has so far received a mixed response from audiences who await the 2023 film’s release. But a new poster teases the animation of a key game location which strikes hope in fans of the classic game.
Illumination released the animated film’s first teaser trailer a month ago, featuring Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. The trailer teased Bowser’s quest to find the Power Stars and how only Mario can stop him and save Princess Peach’s kingdom.
In the trailer, we saw the Mushroom Kingdom and its castle shining in the distance, now Illumination has shared a new poster, revealing the design for Princess Peach’s castle. The design seems to be inspired by the 1996 version of the game, Nintendo’s Super Mario 64.
But what does this specific detail entail for the film’s story? We’ll get right into that!
Super Mario 64 was Nintendo’s first foray into the 3D animation genre, story-building, and even a semi-open-world format. This indicates we might see Mario and Luigi traipse across multiple dimensions and worlds to find the power stars before Bowser and help Princess Peach keep her kingdom safe.
Considering its popularity and captivating story, it makes sense for the filmmaker to draw inspiration from this particular version of the game. The 2023 film can also use the open-world idea to make more sequels and spinoffs if the film reaches a certain point of success.
In fact, Illumination is already in talks with Seth Rogen, who voices Donkey Kong in the upcoming film, and wants to make a spinoff centered around the actor’s character.
This new detail arouses expectations and we hope the film will deliver once it releases in theaters worldwide on April 7, 2023.
