Netflix has announced an animated spinoff series to continue the success of Stranger Things, which has been a highly popular show for the streaming platform since its debut in 2016.
Set in the 1980s, the show follows the thrilling experiences of residents from different generations in the imaginary town of Hawkins, Indiana, and its supernatural and horror elements are reminiscent of popular 1980s franchises such as The Goonies, E.T., Dungeons & Dragons, and Stephen King’s works.
Ahead of the release of its final season, Netflix has recently revealed big news regarding the Stranger Things franchise. Despite the original series coming to an end, the franchise will continue with a new animated spinoff series. The Duffer Brothers and director Shawn Levy, who created the original show, will be producing the spinoff alongside Dan Cohen and Eric Robles.

Netflix has experimented with animated spinoffs for their popular shows in the past, including the 2021 film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which focused on the backstory of Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir.
Nevertheless, the decision to create an animated extension of the Stranger Things universe seems more fitting than any other show they have attempted this with before. This is due to the show’s strong ties to 1980s pop culture, which makes an animated format a sensible choice.
During the period in which Stranger Things is set, there was a flourishing of animated spinoffs for popular franchises. A few of these animated series were continuations of successful shows, such as The Real Ghostbusters, which aired from 1986 to 1991.
However, the late 1980s and early 1990s saw a surge of animated series based on a wide range of properties, including Little Shop of Horrors, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Rambo, Robocop, and The Karate Kid.
At the moment, it is unclear which actors from the Stranger Things cast will be involved in the upcoming animated series. Nonetheless, it is important to maintain the retro ambiance to ensure that it feels like a natural addition to the existing universe, even if it explores a completely different direction. By opting for an animated format, they have essentially ensured that this will be the case.
