Warner Bros. has released the second official trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy. Following years of rumors, a sequel to the 1996 classic is finally nearing its July 16 release date. NBA champion LeBron James takes over from Michael Jordan in the leading role and will portray a fictionalized version of himself.
The latest trailer released today gives a better look at the CGI version of James’ Tune Squad as they prepare to face off against the evil AI-G-Rhythm (Don Cheadle), who has kidnapped the basketball legend’s son. Check it out here:
While the first trailer highlighted the various new properties the movie will feature, the recent one primarily focuses on James and the dynamic of his relationship with the Tune Squad. Check out the first trailer here:
Keeping in line with the 1996 original, A New Legacy will employ the underdog trope and see James and his team in a high-stakes basketball match.
Not only is the fate of James’s son on the line, but the Tune Squad risks deletion from existence as well. The clip also gives another look at their formidable opponents, the Goon Squad, in full action.
The upcoming installment’s replacement to the first movie’s Monstars is a super team composed of real-life NBA and WNBA players, including Los Angeles Lakers player Anthony Davis. It is also set to feature cameo appearances from Chris Paul, Draymond Green, Kyle Kuzma, and Kyrie Irving.
The family story at the movie’s heart should make it different and hopefully better than its predecessor while paying homage to the franchise’s roots at the same time. Space Jam 2 is also packed with the famous Looney Tunes goofy comedy, including Daffy Duck volunteering to coach, Wile E. Coyote going through the multiplier, and a hilarious halftime squabble.
All things considered, Space Jam: A New Legacy is looking up to be an entertaining film for the summer. Although the original was loved by some, it didn’t quite hit the mark for others. So, hopefully, the sequel will clear that front and secure another hit for Warner Bros. and HBO Max this year.
About Space Jam: A New Legacy (Space Jam 2)
Space Jam: A New Legacy (also known as Space Jam 2) is an upcoming American live-action/animated sports comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, from a screenplay by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler, and Terence Nance.
The film is a sequel to Space Jam (1996) and stars basketball player LeBron James, as well as Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Cedric Joe. The film also features the Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, and Lola Bunny.
Like the previous hybrid films, it will be a combination of live-action and traditional hand drawn 2D animation with some CGI effects
Basketball champion and global icon LeBron James and his young son Dom (Cedric Joe) – who dreams of being a video game developer rather than follow his father’s footsteps – find themselves trapped in Serververse, a virtual space ruled by a rogue A.I. named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle).
LeBron must save his son and get them home safe by leading Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against Al-G’s digitized champions on the court, the Goon Squad.
