The CW Confirms Sherlock’s New Adaptation, but with a Twist!

Summary:

  • Sherlock Holmes is set to return to small screens as CW confirms new show called ‘Sherlock & Daughter.’
  • The premise is unexpected, but it has the potential to offer a refreshing take on the age-old lore of the iconic detective.

Sherlock Holmes is set to return to the small screens with CW’s brand new show, ‘Sherlock & Daughter.’

Based on the iconic detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes holds the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of onscreen adaptations for a literary character.

Just a few weeks back, CBS announced their Sherlock-based spinoff show called ‘Watson,’ which will focus on the adventures of Dr. John Watson instead of his genius friend.

The CW announced their upcoming Sherlock adaptation in the TCA Winter Press Tour. The streaming giant announced that they would delve into the world of Sherlock Holmes and present the character in a completely different light.

‘Sherlock & Daughter’ will present a unique concept with a character called Amelia (Blu Hunt) suspecting that Sherlock Holmes is her dad after her mother’s mysterious death.

Batwoman’s Dougray Scott will play the show’s main nemesis, Professor Moriarty.

Check out the official synopsis of the show below:

The mystery thriller series SHERLOCK & DAUGHTER puts Sherlock Holmes (David Thewlis) out of his comfort zone, mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends. Enter: young American Amelia (Blu Hunt, “The Originals,” “The New Mutants”). After her mother’s mysterious murder, she learns her missing father may be the legendary detective. Despite wildly different backgrounds and attitudes, the pair must work together to solve a global conspiracy, crack her mother’s murder, and find out for sure if she really is Sherlock’s daughter.

International Emmy® Award-winning Dougray Scott (“Batwoman,” “Crime”) also stars as Holmes’ nemesis, Moriarty. From Starlings Television Distribution, Albion Television and StoryFirst, SHERLOCK & DAUGHTER is led by showrunner and executive producer James Duff (“The Closer,” “Major Crimes”) and is created, written and executive produced by Brendan Foley (“Cold Courage,” “The Man Who Died”). Micah War Dog Wright (“They’re Watching,” “First Nations Comedy Experience”) and Shelly Goldstein (“Cold Courage,” “Laverne & Shirley”) are writers on the series. Karine Martin, Chris Philip, Peter Gerwe, Dominic Barlow and Ivan Dunleavy also serve as executive producers, along with Escapade Media.

Over the years, Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed with a barrage of accompanying characters never mentioned in the canon. For instance, Netflix’s Enola Holmes and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes both presented their own interpretations of Sherlock’s sister.

Therefore, fans are getting more and more used to the character’s story being expanded in unexpected and mysterious ways.

However, the upcoming film could be the most significant departure from the original lore. Sherlock Holmes is known for his impeccable logic and clarity of thought. Therefore, his having an anonymous affair and a child elsewhere seems hugely out of character.

Throughout the canon, Sherlock’s only love interest is Irene Adler, and even she appears in only one story and never initiates any romantic relationship with the detective.

Although Amelia might not be his daughter after all, the possibility of this happening deviates from the character’s philosophy by a lightyear.

‘Sherlock & Daughter’ might be on their way to creating a version of the character unlike any ever seen before. The outcome is uncertain, but the concept of Sherlock’s daughter could be a refreshing twist on an iconic character.
