Lucifer has gained a loyal fanbase. No one would’ve guessed the Devil himself would be everyone’s favorite protagonist, but here we are. Lucifer has improved drastically over the years, even more so when Netflix decided to pick it up when Fox canceled it after Season 3. No wonder they wanted to rub it in Fox’s face with a hilariously snide comment in Season 5 Episode 15. Guess execs at Fox will have some hurt egos as well.
With the series set to end with its Season 6, the Devil has had a fantastic redemption arc, involving many therapy sessions, deaths, and hurt celestial egos.
In an interview from 2016, actor Tom Ellis spoke about what the show was all about.
We’re taking the epitome of evil and putting him in a redemption story. His main objective in life is to have fun and enjoy the finer things, but he wants people to take responsibility for their own actions instead of putting the blame on him.
He has the ability to draw out people’s deepest and darkest desires. But underlying all of this seemingly inconsequential fun is a daddy issue. He was rejected by his dad, and he bears that chip on his shoulder massively. His dad is represented in his brother, the angel Amenadiel, so therefore he hates his brother as well.

Lucifer’s character is an oxymoron in itself. In the earlier episodes, he had an inflated ego and was self-centered; after all, he’s the king of Hell. But at the same time, as it has been established that the Angels self-actualize, he gave himself the Devil face, meaning he sees himself as this evil, hideous monster who deserved being banished to Hell.
Right from the first season, Lucifer used his charms and mojo to inflate his ego. He was arrogant and never considered how his actions might hurt others and, most of the time dismissed their opinions.
In the latest season, we meet God, who has his ‘mysterious ways’ and a big ego, understandably. When Lucifer constantly argues with him to have him admit that he was a bad parent, it takes God a while to keep his pride aside to admit his mistakes and tell his sons that he loves them. This implies that God did not have healthy relationships with his children ever since the beginning of time.
Lucifer decides he wants to be God so that he can be ‘worthy’ of Chloe’s love after convincing himself that he’s incapable of love. This feeling stems from his father never showing any love to his children.
No wonder Lucifer was the way he was when he was first introduced in Season 1. Of course, the poor man is bound to have suppressed anger and daddy issues which he projects onto everything he does.
Playing Devil’s advocate here, literally and figuratively, but maybe Lucifer wouldn’t have rebelled and acted out either, had his father been there from the start. But then again, we wouldn’t have known the charming Devil that we do now, and he wouldn’t have had his redemption arc.
