Neil Gaiman has finally given an update about the scripts of the much-awaited new episodes of The Sandman.
The fantasy series, which is based on a comic book of the same name, was released by Netflix in August. It would go on to top Netflix’s charts for several weeks in a row, even dethroning Stranger Things as the most popular TV show on Netflix for a brief period.
Both fans and critics have highly acclaimed the Sandman, but it was only in November that we got information about new episodes of the show. No release date has been finalized yet, but they will probably hit the platform in late 2023 or early 2024.
In a Tumblr post, author Neil Gaiman has given some exciting updates for the new episodes of The Sandman.
A fan asked him, “are the Sandman scripts already written for season 2, and did you have a hand in overseeing it?”
In response, the writer said that only some of them are completed. He and his writers are in the process of writing the scripts, and he has a hand in overseeing them.
So, is there anything we know about the upcoming episodes?
The answer is yes, and no.
While Gaiman and the cast of The Sandman have teased possible future narratives, all of them have been vague and leave room for speculation.
Gaiman has repeatedly shown excitement about casting the youngest member of the Endless, Delirium. Other members like Boyd Holbrook and Jenna Coleman have also hinted at the possible return of many characters.
Coleman has even teased a spin-off series featuring Johanna Coleman, but it has yet to be confirmed.
It has also been teased that The Sandman’s next chapter might be split into two parts, much like Stranger Things season 4.
Netflix’s head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, Peter Friedlander, has said that nothing has been confirmed about The Sandman, including the show’s format. Netflix has also confirmed that the new addition to the series won’t be considered ‘season 2’ but just a new bunch of episodes.
There is speculation that the filming will start in early 2023, but any probabilistic release date is just conjecture. The scripts haven’t been finalized yet, and neither is the format. So, there is still time before new episodes of The Sandman pop up on our Netflix recommendations.
Many fans claim that the phenomenal success of The Sandman is because of the writer’s continuous involvement throughout the filming.
Since Gaiman is also involved in writing the new episodes, we can expect the legacy of The Sandman to continue for years to come!
