Television and cinema are now evolving to include representation of overlooked communities shirked in the entertainment industry before. A show that’s been around since the 60s, Doctor Who, is doing the same in its reboot, with steps taken to adapt the characters to be inclusive.
Yasmin Finney explains how her casting as the new Doctor Who companion is a big step and forever changes the show’s outlook on inclusivity.
Though the show has tried incorporating more inclusivity in its characters, it has been slow coming. But the reboot’s Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, makes history as the first gay doctor and Finney as the first trans woman cast for a major role in the show.
Speaking to Vogue, Finney shared how she is excited for longtime viewers of the show to see some much-needed representation on a show they’ve loved for so long and how it’ll “change the world.”
It will change the world. All I can say is I feel so honored to be seen by Russell. I remember growing up idolizing it. In this “very inclusive” iteration, I’m happy to be the representation on a show that means a lot to so many.
The Heartstopper actress commends the show on iterating the story with a lot more inclusivity, not only to keep up with the times but also to provide representation for those who have gone too long without any similar role models.
The show has already made enormous strides in incorporating the inclusivity of several communities. Jodie Whittaker stepping up as the first female incarnation of the Doctor and Mandip Gill’s Yaz becoming the first Muslim lesbian Doctor Who companion are just some of the most recent decisions by the show to keep up with the modern world
The new season of Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary Special, consisting of three episodes, will premiere on the BBC Network in late November 2023, starring Ncuti Gatwa and Yasmin Finney, also marking David Tenant’s return to the show.
