‘Mou Ippon!’ is an upcoming judo-themed anime with female protagonists, and to say that I’m excited would be an understatement.
It’s rare to see a female-centric sports anime that is not just about cute looks but also takes the game seriously. This one happens to be an accurate representation of high school judo for girls and the struggles they go through because of it.
A good sports anime needs a powerful and moving track, Subway Daydream took up the job of creating one for ‘Mou Ippon!.’
The anime’s latest promo video previews its lively opening theme song titled, ‘Stand By Me,’ which perfectly fits the show’s plot.
The video begins with the protagonist, Michi Sonoda, training as her friends Sanae, Towa, and Anna join her. While Sanae and Towa are fellow judoka themselves, Anna is a member of the kendo club and tries to recruit Michi but in vain.
Although we see the girls in high school, the real story begins when Towa defeats Michi in a tournament in middle school. Michi decided to quit judo, but Towa and Sanae motivated her to pursue the sport.
Despite being former opponents, Towa and Michi are close friends and push each other to perform better. As seen in the teaser as well, Towa is happier about Michi’s achievements than her own.
In addition, the franchise has also revealed the plot details for the first episode on the anime’s official website. The show is scheduled to begin broadcasting on January 8, 2023, and HIDIVE will stream it globally simultaneously.

From the promo, we can tell that the anime has a coming-of-age theme going on too.
A sports anime with such a premise is bound to make you emotional, so be prepared to shed some tears while watching this one.
