Akira Toriyama is a legend. He was the one who led the whole Shounen revolution single-handedly with Dragon Ball. He returned with a feature-length film and all we could do was lose our minds.
We all have grown up watching his story. Toriyama’s art is precise, his storytelling is phenomenal, and his character designs are attractive. Toriyama is one of the most celebrated mangakas, and we are lucky to witness his new project.
TOHO began streaming a new “Akira Toriyama World ” promotional video for the anime film of Akira Toriyama’s SAND LAND manga. The film will open in North America in 2024.
The promotional video, which is almost three minutes long, outlines the story and character relationships in the film. It features Beelzebub, Rao, and Thief, who are on their adventure to take down the King.
The character designs are fascinating, and the world-building looks immaculate. Creating a world isn’t easy; most of the time, it feels like patchwork. However, the Sandland seems like the perfect dystopian world, and we can only credit Toriyama for that.
The video also offers an extended preview of the film’s theme song, “Utopia,” by up-and-coming artist imase.
The film won the special jury mention for the best-animated feature film category at the 27th annual Fantasia International Film Festival in July, which is promising.
From the trailer, the movie looks exceptional. And the film is from the legend Akira Toriyama, which significantly raises the audience’s expectations. Even if you aren’t a fan of Toriyama, you should watch this anime since it looks like a lot of fun!

‘SAND LAND’ is a short manga series by Akira Toriyama. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from May to August 2000 and was collected into one tankōbon volume in November 2000 by Shueisha.
A CGI anime film adaptation was released in August 2023, and an original net animation (ONA) series will be streamed worldwide on Disney+ and Hulu in Q2 2024. An action role-playing video game developed by ILCA and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment is set to be released in April 2024.
The story is set in a war-torn future where only a barren wasteland is left and a greedy king controls the water supply. It follows the demon king’s son Beelzebub, his assistant Thief, and Sheriff Rao on a quest to find a long-lost river. The trio encounters many foes on their adventurous journey, including the greedy king’s army.
