The anime film adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land is among the most awaited films in 2023. We got the first look of the setting and the characters from the trailer in December, followed later by character visuals of Beelzebub, Rao, and Thief.
A few more details have been revealed now, so let’s get to that right away.
On Monday, the official website for the Sand Land film released a new trailer. The main voice cast and staff were also revealed. As previously announced, the film is planned for a theatrical release on August 18.
The short video shows the main characters in action, starting with Beelzebub. In the background, the voice says “This summer, the most powerful, most villainous demon will wake up.” Later, Beelzebub is in Rao’s truck, talking about oversleeping, staying up late, and not brushing his teeth.

Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima are co-producing the film, with Toshihisa Yokoshima as the director. Hayashi Mori is penning the script for the film. Yugo Kanno is composing the music.
Sand Land manga is a short series, with only fourteen chapters long that shows the characters in a world struggling with water scarcity. They try to find a new water source for all the inhabitants of the land.
Being a fan of Dragon Ball, the character designs of Sand Land reflect Toriyama’s style. The animation looks great for a film and reminds me of Trigun Stampede. Overall, the humorous tone makes it look like something fun to watch.

‘SAND LAND’ is a short manga series by Akira Toriyama. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from May to August 2000 and was collected into one tankōbon volume in November 2000 by Shueisha.
A CGI anime film adaptation was released in August 2023, and an original net animation (ONA) series will be streamed worldwide on Disney+ and Hulu in Q2 2024. An action role-playing video game developed by ILCA and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment is set to be released in April 2024.
The story is set in a war-torn future where only a barren wasteland is left and a greedy king controls the water supply. It follows the demon king’s son Beelzebub, his assistant Thief, and Sheriff Rao on a quest to find a long-lost river. The trio encounters many foes on their adventurous journey, including the greedy king’s army.
