Puella Magi Madoka Magica, shortened to Madoka Magica, gave a brand new perspective to the magic girls in its initial run from January to April 2011. The series won a variety of awards, such as the Television Award at the 16th Animation Kobe Awards, as well as 12 Newtype Anime Awards and the Grand Prize for animation in the 2011 Japan Media Arts awards.
Since then, it has been adapted into games and manga; however, no new animated content was announced until recently. Madoka Magica made a return to the anime world with the title “Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story” on 4th January 2020.
According to a recent listing released by Aniplex and Aniplex+, the new season of the franchise will run for a total of 13 episodes, broken up into five Blu-Ray and DVD releases for home video shipping.
The story for the second season will be based on a hit mobile-game of the franchise: “Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Gaiden”. With most winter season anime, the total number of episodes is 12, however, with 13 episodes announced for the second season of the anime, one may premiere as a special release.
