We’re merely days away from this Sunday when The Last of Us will premiere on HBO Max, and we already have some exclusive clips from season 1 teasing the characters and their bond. The video game turned TV series is all set to bring the zombie horror genre to a whole new level on January 15, 2023.
In last night’s airing of The Late Late Show with James Corden, the host showed an exclusive clip from the first episode of the season, teasing the testy relationship between Ellie and Marlene. You can view the video here, as shared by @NaughtyDogInfo on Twitter below:
The clip highlights Ellie’s desire to return home and Marlene’s determination to keep her with the Fireflies. Marlene is the Fireflies faction leader who believes Ellie is the key to reversing the virus that has infested the world with zombies.
Merle Dandridge, who also played the character of Marlene in the games, returns to the story in the TV series, and we hope the show will preserve Marlene’s iron will to keep Ellie safe. This clip definitely gives us hope that the show plans to keep most of Dandridge’s character’s features intact from the 2013 game.
A previous clip released on Jimmy Kimmel Live also highlighted the same tense relationship Ellie shares with the rest of the fireflies. In the short clip, when the orphaned teen is asked to count to ten as a test, she calmly reaches eight only to follow with a “fuck you” at the end. You can view the clip below:
After watching the clips picked from the first episode itself, we wonder how the show will go about portraying Pedro Pascal’s Joel. We expect the show to deal with the journey as events set in the past, but that leaves more questions.
Whichever way the show reveals Joel and Ellie’s adventure and her life with the Fireflies, all signs point to a memorable adaptation of the acclaimed video game. Critics have applauded the show for its spectacular performance and riveting story, labeling it as one of the best video game adaptations.
Season 1 of The Last of Us will premiere on HBO Max on January 15, 2023, followed by weekly episodes every Sunday.
