Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is an upcoming TV series that will premiere on September 2, 2022, on Prime Video. The first season is confirmed to have eight episodes.
The creative team has announced that they are planning five seasons in all. Season 2 is already in the works. The Rings of Power does not continue Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit trilogy but portrays a different era on Middle Earth.
The Rings of Power will tell the story of the Second Age of Middle-earth and include all the significant events of the period, including the creation of the titular Rings of Power and Sauron’s rise to power.
The last alliance between Elves and Men will also be covered. In order to tie the Rings of Power into the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the show will feature younger versions of Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Galadriel (Morfydd Clark).
Although Rings of Power will have a similar production design to Jackson’s films, the structure and tone will certainly differ.
Character posters for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power confirm the names of some of the characters.
A series of character posters have been released by Prime Video to promote The Rings of Power. Each sheet depicts the hands and torsos of the characters as well as various props that represent their roles.
In addition, Prime released the names of the characters: Celebrimbor as the forger of the titular rings; Sadoc Burrows as a Harfoot elder; Poppy Proudfellow as another Harfoot; and Largo and Marigold Brandyfoot as Harfoots.
The Rings of Power will feature a large ensemble cast comprised of various Middle-earth races, but the posters feature a single elf (Celebrimbor) and a number of Harfoots (aka Hobbits). The series has a few characters whose roles are unclear, but Celebrimbor is particularly intriguing due to his role in creating the Rings of Power.
By emphasizing the hands and objects of characters, The Rings of Power builds up an ensemble of relatively unknown characters in Middle-earth. We’ll just have to wait and see if fans of the Lord of the Rings movies can be enticed to return to this fantasy world.
It will be fascinating to see what Prime Video does to further encourage viewers to follow these characters on their journeys.
Rings of Power faces a difficult task since it must compete with one of the most beloved books of fantasy literature and one of the most acclaimed film adaptations ever made.
Having received a positive but relatively underwhelming reception with The Wheel of Time, Prime Video appears to be fully focused on The Rings of Power, hoping it can fill the cultural vacuum left by the end of Game of Thrones.
Fans will have to wait and see if The Rings of Power can fulfill its lofty ambition in the end, but overall, The Rings of Power looks true to canon with its characters.
