A while back, Ubisoft had confirmed the existence of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a live service game for the franchise based in multiple settings. It is currently in early development, so don’t expect it any time soon. This introduced a massive gap in the developer’s schedule for Assassin’s Creed content, which was earlier an annual release.
It seems, to plug this gap, a new game in the franchise is in development. According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier and his sources, it would appear that Ubisoft is changing a planned Assassin’s Creed Valhalla expansion into a standalone game.
Codenamed Assassin’s Creed Rift, it shifted from being just an expansion to a standalone game last year. The game will supposedly feature Basim from Valhalla and be smaller in scope than past games. It will focus on stealth gameplay instead of open-world RPG, making it sound more like a classic Assassin’s Creed game than the shift the series took from Origins.
The scope may refer to something akin to Wrath of the Druids or The Siege of Paris, and fans are hopeful the stealth gameplay will be like the ones found in earlier games. Eurogamer has also corroborated this report, saying that the game’s setting may be in Baghdad.
Assassin’s Creed Rift may be planned for a 2022 or a 2023 release. If it is coming this year, chances are it will be confirmed at E3, as Ubisoft has a pattern of announcing a new game at the exhibition and releasing it the same year.
Assassin’s Creed Rift is sure to release before Assassin’s Creed Infinity, but we will have to wait for a release date announcement. Bloomberg’s sources have stated that Ubisoft has “shaken up” several smaller Assassin’s Creed expansions over the past year, so it will be interesting to see what we will be getting from Rift.
For those missing the gameplay from the franchise’s previous titles, Assassin’s Creed Rift may be the game they’ve been craving. If it can land the parkour mechanics like Assassin’s Creed Unity, has a compelling story about Basim, and addresses all the things fans have been missing, this could be a game-changer for the series.
