Get ready for more epic battles and ancient drama in Gladiator 2! The sequel to Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning masterpiece has added some exciting new names to its already impressive cast.
Paul Mescal will take on the role of Lucius, the grown-up version of the brave boy we met in the first film. The story will pick up three decades after the events of Gladiator, where we saw Russell Crowe’s Maximus sacrifice his life for freedom.
However, we’ll still see some familiar faces: Connie Nielsen is back as Lucilla, Lucius’ mother and the former lover of Maximus.
Gladiator 2 is bringing some fresh talent to the ancient world. May Calamawy, who wowed us as Layla El-Faouly in Marvel’s Moon Knight, has joined the cast as a mysterious new character.
Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) is close to signing on as Emperor Geta, the son of Lucilla and the brother of Lucius. He will replace Barry Keoghan, who had to decline due to a busy schedule.
Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, and Matt Lucas are also on board for secret roles, while Derek Jacobi will reprise his role as Gracchus, the wise senator who helped Maximus in the first film.
So, what do we know about the plot of Gladiator 2? This is the burning question in the minds of the fans right now.
The sequel will focus on Mescal’s Lucius, who was the nephew of Maximus and the grandson of Marcus Aurelius in the first film.
Will he follow in their footsteps and become a noble leader? Or will he clash with Hechinger’s Geta, his power-hungry uncle? Crowe once hinted that Lucius would rise to the throne in the sequel, but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s true.
The script for Gladiator 2 comes from David Scarpa, who worked with Scott on All the Money in the World and also wrote Napoleon, a biopic about the French emperor.
The film is also packed with some amazing stars in the supporting roles. Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Denzel Washington are all on board for the epic adventure.
Washington has teamed up with Scott before on American Gangster, but we don’t know who he is in Gladiator 2 yet. Neither do we know who Pascal is, but we’re sure he’ll be awesome. Quinn will portray Emperor Caracalla, another son of Lucilla and a rival of Geta.
The sequel will also bring back some of the talented crew members who made the first Gladiator look so stunning, including cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max, and costume designer Janty Yates, who all earned Oscar nods for their work.
Mescal is a rising star in Hollywood, with an Oscar nomination for his role in Aftersun. Calamawy is also making waves with her hilarious performance in Hulu’s comedy series Ramy and her groundbreaking role as the MCU’s first Egyptian superhero in Moon Knight.
Gladiator was a smash hit, earning twelve Oscar nods and winning five, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. Gladiator 2 is set to be a blockbuster event, and we can’t wait to see it on the big screen in 2024.
