It’s always interesting to explore iconic personalities and scratch beneath the surface of their lives in the limelight. In one such endeavor, we have Netflix coming out with a dramatization of Marilyn Monroe’s life. Starring Ana de Armas as the legend, Blonde is written and directed by Andrew Dominik.
So what is it all about?
Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde, will premiere on September 23. Based on Joyce Carol Oates’s book of the same name, it will explore Monroe’s rise to fame and the unpleasant sides of her personal and professional life kept secret to preserve Hollywood’s glamour.
Let’s get into all the details!
1. Release Date
Blonde will first have its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 8. Then it will have a limited theatrical release, exclusively in New York on September 16.
For most of us who won’t have the opportunity to watch the film at these two events, Blonde will be available on Netflix on September 23, worldwide.
2. Plot
There aren’t a lot of details about which parts of Marilyn Monroe’s life the film will bring to the screen. The film itself is based on Joyce Carol Oates’s book of the same name. Although the writer has done her due diligence while researching for the book, we also have to remember not to take the film as fact.
I expect Blonde will depict Monroe’s rise to fame and the toll she had to pay for the same. Since the film also includes the characters of Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller (her second and third husbands), we can expect the later parts of her life to be portrayed in more detail.
Cinematically, Dominik has stated that the film relies on “very little dialogue.” It also seems like it is primarily shot in black and white, with bursts of colors coming in during pivotal scenes—an aspect that is sure to elevate the film.
3. Cast & Characters
As we all know, Ana de Armas will be headlining the film as Monroe. Here’s a table to help you understand who else plays who:
Character | Actor |
Arthur Miller | Adrien Brody |
Joe DiMaggio | Bobby Cannavale |
Charles Chaplin Jr | Xavier Samuel |
Gladys Pearl Baker | Julianne Nicholson |
John F Kennedy | Caspar Phillipson |
Allan “Whitey” Snyder | Toby Huss |
James Dean | Luke Whoriskey |
Tony Curtis | Michael Masini |
4. Trailer & Visuals
The trailer highlights how the film explores the underbelly of Monroe’s life, as she herself alludes to the fact that the Marilyn Monroe persona is simply one invented for the screens. The trailer moves to the haunting track of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” famously sung by Monroe herself in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

5. About Blonde
Blonde is an upcoming American biopic based on the life of American actress Marilyn Monroe. Written and directed by Andrew Dominik, it has been adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates 2000 novel of the same name.
After a traumatic childhood, Norma Jeane Mortenson becomes an actress in Hollywood in the 1950s and early 1960s. She becomes world famous under the stage name “Marilyn Monroe”, but her on-screen appearances are in stark contrast to the love issues, exploitation, abuse of power, and drug addiction she faces in her private life
Ana de Armas will be playing Monroe, while Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, and Julianne Nicholson star in supporting roles. Netflix is set to release the film on September 28, 2022.
