Netflix is known for having a diverse streaming catalog, fantastic video quality, and emptying our wallets. As the saying goes, with great media comes a great cost.
The company has been trolled and criticized many times for its subscription prices, forcing them to think of various new and affordable plans. Even after introducing lower costs, the company didn’t seem to gain the support it expected.
Despite having a near-monopoly and upper hand in terms of titles provided, Netflix’s competitors still had an advantage due to the cost. The prices and plans offered are the deciding factors for any consumer, and Netflix seemed to fail in that field.
However, that won’t be the case anymore as Netflix has now come up with a new subscription tier, Basic with Ads. The plan will launch on November 3, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. EDT.
Similar to its Basic plan, this one has everything, with the only difference being that the user will have to bear with ads. While it sounds like a bother, this is a dream come true for many broke people like students.
Netflix states that many things will remain the same, like a huge variety of TV shows and movies, personalized viewing experience, and more. What will change is the amount of content you can access, the video quality of 720p/HD, and ads.
The advertisements will be a total of 4-5 minutes per hour, with one ad being 15-30 seconds each. These ads will run at the beginning or in the middle of whatever you’re watching, most likely at a cliffhanger.
Moreover, Netflix will make this plan available in over 12 countries, and the charges for each are given as follows:
Country | Price per Month |
Australia | $6.99 |
Brazil | R$18.90 |
Canada | $5.99 |
France | €5.99 |
Germany | €4.99 |
Italy | €5.49 |
Japan | ¥790 |
Mexico | $99 |
South Korea | ₩5,500 |
Spain | €5.49 |
United Kingdom | £4.99 |
United States | &6.99 |
The ad-supported plan worried Standard and Premium plan users, but Netflix has assured that existing consumers won’t be affected. Rather, the Basic with Ads plan will only complement the other subscription tiers.
While this is an excellent step towards making the platform more accessible, no one likes ads, regardless. On the brighter side, consumers might just get lucky and find something useful, as the ads will be based on users’ preferences.
