It is very rare for a manga to get a western adaptation, but The Summit of the Gods’ global appeal almost seems to demand it.
The animated film has already created waves at the Cannes Film Festival and in its home country of France.
The story follows the Japanese journalist Makoto Fukamichi on his journey to uncover the mystery behind George Mallory and Andrew Irvine’s 1924 Everest ascent.
He joins the legendary mountaineer Habu on his ascent to discover the contents of the antique camera in his possession, which might have belonged to Mallory.
Netflix has released a trailer for the France-Luxembourg animated film adaptation of Jiro Taniguchi’s The Summit of the Gods manga.
The trailer begins with Makoto’s first meeting with Habu, the legendary climber who agrees to let him join him on his ascent.
The rest of the trailer features amazing visuals combined with Habu contemplating what climbing is really about.
Netflix has worldwide rights to the film except in France, Benelux, China, Japan, and Korea and will release it on November 30, 2021. The film will release in select US theaters on November 24, 2021.
This film looks fantastic with its western 2D animation combined with photorealistic CG backgrounds. The aerial shots in the trailer can be easily mistaken for actual drone shots.
Mallory and Irvine’s expedition is speculated to be the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, but it was never confirmed due to their disappearance during the journey.
Due to the mysterious nature of the incident, it has gained recognition all around the world.
Although the manga was highly rated already, the movie too has received the same treatment. We already know this is going to be good. It’s just a matter of time when you get to watch it.

The Summit of the Gods is a manga series written and illustrated by Jiro Taniguchi. Based on a 1998 novel by Baku Yumemakura.The manga was serialized in the magazine Business Jump by Shueisha.
An English-language version was licensed by British company Fanfare/Ponent Mon. It has also been published in French by Kana, German by Schreiber & Leser, and Spanish by Ponent Mon.
In 2001, it was awarded a prize for excellence by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
The story follows Fukamachi, a photographer who finds a camera supposedly belonging to George Mallory, a mountaineer who went missing on Mount Everest, and goes on a mountain-climbing adventure along with his friend Habu Joji.
