Netflix is certainly hoping to “catch ‘em all” as it prepares for a live-action series of Pokemon. Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson is reported to be the live-action’s writer and executive producer.
Born out of the video game Pokemon Red and Blue, Pokemon first appeared on our screens in the anime season titled Indigo League, in 1997.
It has proven to be one of the most successful video game adaptions, that has spawned life beyond the small screen — advancing its video game franchise, adding over 20 seasons of anime aired in 183 countries, a huge merchandise collection, theme parks and of course, a live-action movie.
The Netflix live-action series is predicted to follow the tune of Detective Pikachu, which fulfilled my childhood dream of seeing what our world would look like with 3-D Pokemon in it.
But many who heard the news, have not taken to it with the kindest regards. Here’s a fan tweet that chalks it out.
Some fans have suggested developing the story in a new “region,” (as opposed to the original eight main regions where the main characters are from) so that even if the series flops, it won’t affect Pokemon’s canon.
Others are on board with the idea only if the series will have the same treatment as Detective Pikachu.
For Netflix, creating a thriving Pokemon live-action series may not be an easy feat — Anime fans guard their shows and beloved characters like no other.
And for good reason: Anime’s appeal lives in its visual accuracy. The beauty of hand-drawn anime is most times, if not, always, lost in the CGI of live-actions. Not to forget, live-actions have previously butchered and white-washed animes (See: Death Note) to the extent of being unfit counterparts to the original.
Netflix has already provided a home to Pokemon: Indigo League and Pokemon Journeys, and will also stream the anime’s latest season Master Journeys on September 10, 2021. Its history of success is definitely a reason behind Netflix greenlighting the live-action series.
The streamer is also dipping heavily into adapting animes as live-action movies. Although the Death Note live-action wasn’t well-received, we still can look forward to the upcoming One Piece and Cowboy Bebop live-actions to see if Netflix has paid heed to previous criticism.
Currently, there are no solid details available for the production yet, including a release date.
