Actor Adam Driver and director Noah Baumbach team up again after the incredible Marriage Story for the upcoming apocalyptic black comedy White Noise. Netflix just released the film’s trailer, so we’re here to break it down for you. But first, let’s talk about the movie briefly.
Noah Baumbach’s film will release at the Venice Film Festival on August 31, 2022, and later on September 30 at the New York Film Festival. The film’s OTT release on Netflix will follow a few weeks after its limited theatrical release, in late 2022.
The film follows Jack Gladney, professor of Hitler studies at The-College-on-the-Hill, husband to Babette, and father to four children/stepchildren, and how their lives are changed forever when The Airborne Toxic event spills chemical waste all over their hometown. The film stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Raffey Cassidy, André Benjamin, Alessandro Nivola, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Don Cheadle.
Netflix released the black comedy’s trailer a week before its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and the Gladney family’s eerie calmness in the wake of an apocalyptic end is chilling.
The trailer opens with a curious Denise and her siblings watching other cars pass by as they all try to escape the town that is drowning in chemical waste. When Jack Gladney asks why it matters what others do, she smoothly replies, “I want to know how scared I should be.”
The trailer then shows a series of shots where the townspeople try to keep a “normal” routine in the middle of the apocalypse, but that may be easier said than done as more dangers are hinted at in small shots between the false sense of security.
Babette confesses that all that matters is that the children are safe and they’re together, but the soundtrack suggests that her sense of safety and definition of a “good life” will soon be shaken.
The film, based on Don Delillo’s novel of the same name, portrays the themes of death, mystery, and consumerism in the trailer. Driver’s Gladney wishes in a voiceover, “May the days be aimless, let the seasons drift. Do not advance the action according to plan.”
The 2022 film will show the less cliche and more real story of the behavior of normal people when the end is near.
