One genre that Netflix has in abundance and never falls short of is teen romance—and if the official teaser for Heartstopper is any indication, it’s about to be one of the sweetest/warmest series in the streamer’s vast library.
Heartstopper is Netflix’s latest YA gay love story based on the popular, serialized, ongoing graphic novel series of the same name by Alice Oseman.
The short clip gave fans the first look at Charlie, Nick, and the rest of the characters, including Charlie’s sister Tori and friends Tao, Elle, Tara, and Darcy as they make their live-action debut. The teaser also revealed the April release date for the 8-part series.
Heartstopper will follow the love story of “sensitive athlete Nick and introspective overthinker Charlie, an unlikely duo who meet in class and slowly form an unexpectedly close friendship.”
The teaser makes it abundantly clear that Charlie is falling hard and boundlessly for Nick—but he may or may not be in for heartbreak if his feelings are unrequited.
At one point in the clip, his friends tell him to be cautious. However, by the end of the trailer, Nick is knocking on Charlie’s door in the middle of pouring rain, so there might be something there after all.
The one-minute clip shows the emotional rollercoaster Charlie and the viewers, will go through and showcase themes of love and friendship with some callbacks and references to the source material as well.
The series tagline makes it even more evident that the audience is in for a heart-warming tale: “Boy meets boy. Boys become friends. Boys fall in love.”
Fans of the webcomic had positive reactions and great expectations over the teaser, and soon there was a Twitter thread showing just how faithful the series will be to the source material.
The webcomic was first published in September 2016 and made its way to printed copies in 2018, available to purchase from bookshops and retailers. It is also available to read online on Tapas, Tumblr, Webtoon, and Patreon.
The story, like many other works by Oseman, explores friendship, mental health, eating disorders, and LGBTQ+ themes. Oseman also created and wrote for the Netflix series, which is directed by Euros Lyn.
Heartstopper is led by Joe Locke as Charlie Spring and Kit Connor as Nick Nelson, alongside Yasmin Finney, William Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Cormac Hyde-Corrin, Sebastian Croft, Tobie Donovan, and Rhea Norwood.
Heartstopper premieres on Netflix on April 22, 2022.
