Netflix Cancels Percy Jackson Spinoff Movie Trilogy!

Summary:

  • Netflix has canceled the Percy Jackson spinoff trilogy movie, The Kane Chronicles.
  • The fate of the Kane Chronicles depends on whether any other studio takes this opportunity and secures the rights.

Netflix has canceled the previously announced Percy Jackson spinoff trilogy based on the famous Kane Chronicles.

Percy Jackson is an extremely popular novel series by Rick Riordan and features the iconic journey of the titular demigod.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief was first adapted into a movie in 2010, but it was a disastrous flop. However, the endeavor of adapting the iconic series has recently found new wings with Disney+’s new TV adaptation. The series has earned a season 2 renewal and has generated positive reviews from fans and critics alike.

In a recent statement by Rick Riordan on Goodreads, he mentions that Netflix canceled the Percy Jackson spinoff based on The Kane Chronicles.

The future of the spinoff now depends on whether another studio wants to do something lucrative with the opportunity. Check out his quote below:

Thanks! Right now, Kane Chronicles is in “turnaround,” which means Netflix has decided not to move forward and their option has lapsed after trying for two years to develop a script they liked. Now it depends on whether another studio would like to step in, assume the preproduction costs, and move forward. This is not at all unusual. It happens, I would guess, with the majority of film projects. Also, the streaming industry as a whole is shrinking their development slate right now, meaning they are canceling more content and making less content. Kane got caught in that trend, despite the strong success of Percy TV. Magnus Chase we are holding in reserve for now. I don’t want to do that until I have enough bandwidth to do it properly, and as you may have guessed, I’m pretty busy! (Hence also the reason you won’t see me in Australia for a tour any time soon / probably ever.)

The Kane Chronicles is set in the same universe as Percy Jackson and has three books: The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent’s Shadow.

The Kane Chronicles was first announced as a Netflix adaptation in 2020 but has been in development hell since then.

In the meantime, Disney+’s adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been well received by everyone, earning a respectable 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It has come after the abysmal performance of the movie adaptations, which failed even to crack the 50% mark on Rotten Tomatoes.

Since the track record of Riordan’s movie adaptations isn’t good, it is probably a good thing that Netflix has decided to shelve the project. Moreover, if Netflix is struggling to come up with a good script, there must be something fundamentally wrong with the adaptation.

Therefore, canceling the adaptation is probably best for the sanctity of the books.

Got the rare talent to binge an entire show in a single sitting just like that. Although a sucker for psychological thrillers, no bias for any genre when it comes to a good story. A living proof that Netflix and chill is not a myth!
