The final school bell has rung for Mr. Iglesias, as news comes in that Netflix has decided to cancel the show after its two-season run.
Gabriel Iglesias starred in the eponymous show that debuted on Netflix in 2019. Iglesias played the role of a warm-hearted teacher working at Woodrow Wilson High, a school that his character himself had attended. He encounters many gifted, but perhaps ill-understood kids who simply need a second chance to express themselves better.
The rest of the ensemble cast includes Sherri Shepherd, Jacob Vargas, Maggie Geha, Richard Gant, Cree Cicchino, Fabrizio Guido, and Tucker Albrizzi.
The first season of the multi-camera sitcom was ordered for ten 30-minute episodes. In June 2020, it was renewed for Season 2 with 11 episodes that aired in December 2020. Now, in July 2021, it has received the axe.
Mr. Iglesias is not the only show that fans are disappointed to see go. Some other shows that have been canceled right after their first season are Jupiter’s Legacy, Teenage Bounty Hunters, and Country Comfort, among others.
If you’re wondering why this has been a pattern with Netflix, it’s because often instead of having just a pilot episode to test out the series, Netflix will order the whole first season. This in itself becomes a litmus test—and there have been shows that have benefited from it. Bridgerton, Fate: The Winx Saga, Firefly Lane, and Shadow and Bone were all renewed immediately after their first season release.
It does seem that although the first season of Mr. Iglesias was noteworthy, Season 2 did not throw enough weight around for Netflix to continue with it.
However, this isn’t going to be the last we see of Gabriel Iglesias on the streaming platform, who is already signed on for a third stand-up comedy special on Netflix.
