Netflix Releases The Sandman First Look At TUDUM Fan Event

Tonight, we will achieve what no one has even attempted. We will summon and imprison… Death.

With a stone coin, a feather from an Angel’s wing, and blood, Netflix is ready to summon the Neil Gaiman Sandman comics to life.

After years and years of will-they-won’t-they, the live-action Sandman series has finally gotten its first teaser.

Revealed at Netflix’s global fan event, TUDUM, the teaser gives The Sandman fans the first look at actor Tom Sturridge as Dream of the Endless, the main character of the upcoming series.

Netflix has not yet revealed the premiere date for The Sandman. However, a release in late 2021 or early 2022 can be expected.

The clip shows Roderick Burgess as he tries to summon (and capture) Death with a ritual. However, he realises the Endless that he has summoned isn’t Death but one of her many ‘siblings.’ He lists Desire, Destiny and Despair and wonders, “Which one have I got?”

We get glimpses of the three comic-accurate symbols of powers of Dream of the Endless. The Dreamstone, Dream’s Sand Pouch and Dream’s Helm. And then the helm reveals the first look at Tom Sturridge as Dream, aka The Sandman.

The series is based on what is considered as one of DC Comics’ most iconic comic series of all time, The Sandman, created by Neil Gaiman. Season 1 will focus on the first two graphic novels in the series: Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House.

Preludes & Nocturnes followsan occultist who wants to capture Death but ends up trapping her younger brother Dream instead.

After 75 years of imprisonment, Dream escapes and goes on a quest for his lost objects of power, where he encounters the likes of Lucifer and John Constantine.

In The Doll’s House, Dream is on a path to recapture his lost possessions, where he learns that a woman named Rose Walker has become a dream vortex and threatens to rip apart his world.

He has to choose whether to ruthlessly murder Rose or risk destroying his entire kingdom.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Sandman:

A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.

Death & Desire

The Netflix series is about to be the first one to not crash-land before it even got time to fly. Previous attempts at adapting the story for the film include a 1990s project and the 2013 one with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which were both abandoned in development. The new series will supposedly be ‘the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.’

Alongside Sturridge, the cast includes are Gwendoline Christie, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Asim Chaudhry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, and Patton Oswalt.

Gaiman is writing the script with David S. Goyer. While the plot will remain the same, Gaiman has said that the setting will change from when the comics originally began in 1989 to the present day.

Dream’s imprisonment now lasts 105 years instead of 75 years to not mess up the timeline. Some characters will also be reimagined for diversity to reflect Gaiman’s approach today.
