Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the beloved Eric Effiong in Sex Education, will return for Season 4 of the series, scheduled to premiere in 2023.
Ncuti Gatwa has appeared in all three previous seasons of the series and is one of the show’s most loved characters. He plays best friend to Otis Milburn, the teen protagonist of the show, and had substantial character development through the years.
Several cast members have reportedly quit the Netflix teen drama in the last few months due to their busy schedules or other commitments. The list includes Simone Ashley, Patricia Allison, Rakhee Thakkar, and Tanya Reynolds.
After several exit announcements, fans had been wondering if Gatwa would also follow suit. This seemed even more probable since the actor had recently bagged the biggest role of his career when he was cast as the titular Doctor in the next season of Doctor Who. Gatwa’s big break made us doubt his return in Sex Education Season 4.
According to recent reports from Variety, though Gatwa is following a busy schedule, he will not stay away from Sex Education. It is confirmed that Ncuti Gatwa will return as Eric Effiong in Season 4. The new season is yet to begin production. Schedules will be adjusted according to Gatwa’s other commitments.
The news of Gatwa’s return is great news for the fandom, as Season 3 did not end Eric’s story satisfactorily. Season 3 saw Eric breaking up with his boyfriend, Adam, after cheating on him with another boy from his hometown.
While Gatwa’s return increases hopes of Adam and Eric getting back together, it could also be an opportunity for the two to grow separately and figure out their priorities in life. Besides, it leaves scope for the love triangle between Raheem, Eric, and Adam to be revived.
There’s a lot to be expected from Season 4, and with several cast members quitting the series, new characters are expected to be introduced. However, many viewers expressed having doubts about the new season, especially after rumors suggested Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve Wiley in the series, will not be returning.
As of now, fans should feel relieved to know that at least Eric Effiong will be back in Season 4.
