Known for doing his own stunts, actor Tom Cruise held the record for holding his breath underwater for an unbelievable six minutes. But the Mission Impossible actor was recently beaten by Avatar 2’s star Kate Winslet who overshot the record by more than a minute and set a new high of seven minutes and fifteen seconds.
But now Mabel Cadena, who played Namora in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has disclosed that she came pretty close to breaking the record. In an interview with ScreenRant, the actor discussed how her competitive nature came out during the underwater training, and she immediately aimed for Winslet’s record. You can read her full quote below:
My first immersion was around 30 seconds; on the same day, I could do six minutes and thirty-five seconds. The training was amazing, because, on the same day, I can have a big difference [from] my first immersion to my second immersion. I’m very competitive, so Chris, my coach, told me, “Kate Winslet has the record, so if you want to be the winner, you need to learn a lot of things.” I really was over Kate Winslet [at one point], but now I don’t have time for a better record.
While the Mexican actress did not disclose how close she came to beating the record, but she crossed Cruise’s time on her first day and on her second try! Both films had a similar setting, with the Metkayina Clan and Talokan empire set underwater, so it’s understandable for Cadena to feel competitive.
The cast for both sequels had to go through extensive underwater training since their stories originated there. It is commendable that both actresses could achieve such a feat only after a few days or months of training, and it only shows how strong their work ethic is during a project.
Both Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are currently available for streaming on Disney+.
