Mameda sneaks into Enshi’s house after being denied entry by her apprentice, Enu. She meets Enshi and declares she is here to prove her name, and Enshi understands that she has passed Byakudanji’s test.
Enshi tells Mameda that her next test will consist of listening to her say an opening story, Jugemu, and remember it for the next week. She tells her she will not allow a single word or syllabus to be out of place. Mameda is amazed by her narration and thinks that even though it is an opening story, it sounds like the main act.
Mameda struggles while practicing and decides to go somewhere quiet. We see a flashback of Enshi when she was young, asking a rakugoka to be his apprentice, where she first learns Jugemu. She tells him she feels tied down by her name.
Mameda listens to Enshi’s story again and rushes to the forest. She sits by herself and practices intensely for days straight, motivated by her bond with Bunko. She arrives at the test, highly worn out.
Enshi is surprised by Mameda’s perfect execution of the story. She remembers her teacher and how he tells her that a name can greatly support some people. Mameda, exhausted, faints.
When Mameda wakes up, Enshi tells her about how she learned Jugemu from a Daikoukutei. He was Bunko’s master, and even though Enshi wanted to be his apprentice, he chose Bunko instead. She understands why Bunko chooses Mameda and clears her for the test.
Byakudanji tells Bunko about Mameda clearing the test and how she will have to face Master Utaroku next, who had the strongest attachment to Daikoukutei.
Bunko asks Byakudanji if he feels she is qualified to have an apprentice, and he tells her she seems more human. She then remembers how her Master found her in her fox demon form in the forest.
