Although the My Hero Academia manga finished in August, creator Kohei Horikoshi is not done sharing stories from the beloved universe. With My Hero Academia: You’re Next — the fourth film in the franchise — debuting in North America this week, the manga has received its first post-series expansion with the debut of a new promotional one-shot by creator Kohei Horikoshi. The new one-shot is intended to pave the way for the upcoming movie.
Shonen Jump’s official X account revealed that a one-shot manga by Kohei Horikoshi for the new My Hero Academia movie, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, was released on Viz Media on October 8, 2024. The special one-shot manga is named My Hero Academia Special One-Shot Manga: A Piece of Cake. My Hero Academia The Movie: You’re Next premiered in Japan on August 2, 2024, and is set to come out in the United States on October 11, 2024.
The movie is based on an original story by author Kohei Horikoshi, who also managed the character artwork and oversaw the movie in general. The author stated that the movie’s events would match the timeline of the My Hero Academia anime. The movie takes place during the same timeframe as the anime’s seventh season.
The latest one-shot centers on Class 1-A discovering Deku’s notebook and going through all the observations he’s penned down about them during the series. In season 7, Deku is seen in his Dark Hero outfit hanging out with his Class 1-A peers. Naturally, some people are more excited about Deku’s notes than others. The downtime is short-lived, though, as All Might calls upon the next generation.
The one-shot chapter concludes with All Might delivering a brief monologue, reflecting on the end of the Symbol of Peace era and passing the torch to his students.
“I wonder what the ‘mother of the term Quirk’ who once claimed that Meta abilities are human Quirks would make of the era I’ve established,” reflects a de-powered All Might. “‘You, foolish Toshniori Yagi, don’t turn away from the idea of leaning on each other.’ Would she scold me like this? I hope so. The era of the symbol is already over. Now, it’s their turn.”
The chapter consists of only 7 pages and mainly focuses on establishing the characters’ status before the start of the movie. In the last pages of the manga, new characters like Dark Might, Giulio Gandini, and Anna Scervino are hinted at for the upcoming movie. Nevertheless, their presence is only a brief cameo.
The musclebound form sets Dark Might apart from All Might, who lost access to it after fighting All for One. It appears that the movie will focus on the theme of confronting someone with the abilities of All Might, for whom most of Class 1-A has an idolizing reverence.
During training sessions, it was evident that Deku and Bakugo’s admiration for All Might could hinder their performance when facing him directly. Despite their growth, their respect for him remains unchanged. Deku’s main obstacle in the movie might be conquering his fear and admiration for his mentor’s strength and understanding that just because this person resembles All Might and has his abilities, it doesn’t mean he is invincible.
Challenging All Might is one of Deku’s final major obstacles and one of the major mental blocks he should get rid of, so addressing this in the My Hero Academia: You’re Next movie is very fitting.
The one-shot is available on Viz’s Shonen Jump app.
