My Hero Academia follows the journey of UA students to become heroes. In midst of that story, we often forget that the teachers have their past too and they too, were students once.
Season 5 episode 19 of the anime sheds some light on Aizawa and Present Mic’s past which had the fans reaching for tissues.
Gran Torino and Tsukauchi call Present Mic and Aizawa to take a look at Kurogiri. Both of the teachers are usually calm and collected even in the tensest of situations, but they were on edge from the very beginning, setting us up for what was coming.
It is revealed that Kurogiri is Shirakumo Oboro, a former classmate of Aizawa and Present Mic. They brought in the duo in order to reach out to their friend and reveal sensitive information about the League of Villains. What followed next had fans in tears.
Aizawa starts crying while trying to reach out to his friend. Although all the effort seems futile at first, Kurogiri’s resolve begins to waver and Shirakumo begins to surface a little. He reveals a single word “Hospital” when asked about Nomus.
Although the anime did a great job with the visuals and the flashback, this scene hit extra hard for those of us who have read the My Hero Academia: Vigilante’s manga. The spinoff covers the heroic death of Shirakumo where he sacrifices himself to save some children.
The truly sad thing is that despite being modified to become a Nomu, Shirakumo retains the strong sense of duty he has displayed in the past. Sadly, now that is directed towards Shigaraki Tomura. He remains true to his mission and the ones he wants to protect, even as a Nomu.
Seeing a calm and collected individual like Aizawa in tears made even the most stone-faced of us cracked. This only goes on to show the importance of the time at UA high school which will go on to influence students far into their future.
