“My Dress-Up Darling” is one of the more unexpected anime blockbusters of 2022. At the beginning of the series, the reclusive Wakana Gojo, whose main pastime is making Hina ningyo dolls, establishes an unusual friendship with Marin Kitagawa, a popular girl at his school.
It turns out Marin wants to cosplay as some of her favorite characters, and Gojo finds up utilizing his sewing skills to help her construct new outfits.
Viewers overwhelmingly appreciated “My Dress-Up Darling” following the release of its first season, to the point that at least one “Attack on Titan” fan felt enraged with “My Dress-Up Darling” due to the latter series’ popularity nearing that of the former.
The creator of the manga “My Dress-Up Darling” is a fan of the program, stating that viewing the first two episodes left them to overcome with emotion.
Given how popular the first season of “My Dress-Up Darling” was, its fans have most likely been hoping for news of a sequel since it ended in late March 2022.
Fortunately, the series’ official social media announced a few months later that Season 2 is now in its early stages of production.
What is the plot of My Dress-Up Darling Season 2?
“My Dress-Up Darling,” like the most famous anime, is based on an ongoing manga series by artist Shinichi Fukuda. This means that, like the previous season, the upcoming Season 2 will draw on current material, and fans will clearly know which tales will be adapted.
First and foremost, as Reddit user Ver3232 pointed out in a discussion discussing Season 2’s introduction, Season 1 translates Chapters 1-39 of the manga “My Dress-Up Darling.” As a result, several people, including Steeldj22, have requested that Season 2 begin with Chapter 40.
The show’s intro sequence even includes footage of a costume from Chapter 40 of the manga, implying that Season 2, Episode 1 will introduce viewers to this look for the first time in the series proper.
Of course, “My Dress-Up Darling” fans who want to understand more about the Season 2 narrative may start reading the manga source material, starting with Chapter 40.
If the books are correct, “My Dress-Up Darling” Season 2 will focus on the building and blossoming relationship between Wakana Gojo and Marin Kitagawa and how the protagonists dig deeper into the vast and varied world of cosplay.
Who is starring in My Dress-Up Darling Season 2?
The U.S. edition of “My Dress-Up Darling” is available in two versions, with the original language track intact and English subtitles added and dubbed into English by an extra cast of actors, as is familiar with most large anime productions first aired in Japanese. It’s probable that the principal cast members from both seasons of “My Dress-Up Darling” will return for Season 2.
Shoya Ishige played the lonely doll maker and costume tailor Wakana Gojo in the Japanese original, while Paul Date played a role in the English dub. Marin Kitagawa, a famous cosplayer, was performed by Hina Suguta in Japanese and Amanda Lee in English.
Another high school-aged cosplayer, Sajuna Inui, was represented in the Japanese and English cuts by Atsumi Tanezaki and Risa Mei, respectively. At the same time, Hina Yomiya and Jad Saxton played the character’s sister, Shinju Inui. Misako Tomioka is set to return as the narrator for Season 2 of “My Dress-Up Darling.”
Is there a trailer for My Dress-Up Darling Season 2?
While the official Japanese-language Twitter account for “My Dress-Up Darling” confirmed that a sequel is in the works, little more is known about its development beyond this initial confirmation.
The tweet announcing the “My Dress-Up Darling” Season 1 sequel includes a link to a trailer on Sony-owned anime distributor Aniplex’s Japanese-language YouTube page.
However, this teaser is entirely made out of the existing video, so rather than hinting at what’s to come, it’s more of a celebration of everything fans appreciated about Season 1.
It’s also worth noting that the trailer’s title, or Gokusen seisaku kettei, alludes to it as comparable to a choice to continue the series. This video makes no specific reference to the sequel being a second season as opposed to, say, a movie.
However, in his Tweet about the news, animation producer Shota Umehara referred to the sequel as two or Niki, indicating that there will be a second season, providing some context to a sparse initial trailer-of-sorts.
