Rudeus struggles to fit in with the townsfolk in episode 2 of Mushoku Tensei Season 2, titled “The Forest in the Dead of Night.”

Several months have passed since Rudeus met Counter Arrow, and he has built up a solid reputation over that time. Improving his body and skills simultaneously, he carries out a lot of jobs within the town and tells people to let him know if they hear a word of his mother.

For old-time’s sake, he sets out on an adventure with Counter Arrow again, but everything does not sail smoothly with a sudden ambush of Snow Drakes. To Rudeus, however, they are merely insects.

Rudeus has been struggling internally since Eris left, and he desperately tries to fill that void. He spent many months holding up this façade; with a grin and a pleasant personality to everybody he met, he built up a solid reputation in the town.

However, people like Paul see right through the smile, and Rudeus understands it too. Desperate to prove his worth to himself, he will likely take on more dangerous jobs and may even decide to try and find Eris once again.

Sara’s relationship with him has also improved drastically, and she may even have a bit of a crush on him. Rudeus is not romantically interested in anyone other than Eris, so that situation will only end in disaster.

3. Recap of Episode 2

Over the next couple of months, Rudeus continues training with the adventurers and working on himself to become stronger. Boosting both endurance and strength, he sees an incredible amount of progress over the duration while he searches for his mother at the same time.

Counter Arrow invites Rudeus on another mission; this time, they venture deep into the caverns. They pick up Snow Drake scales from the floor while constantly on the watch for the beast itself, and eerie silence makes the situation scarier.

Out of nowhere, a large pack of Snow drakes ambush the party, putting them on the back foot. Although just barely, Rudeus and the rest of the party use their magic spells to keep them at bay. Another party shows up out of nowhere and joins them in hunting the Snow Drakes, a part of their mission.

For once, Rudeus also joins in for the celebratory drinks, where Sara is teased repeatedly for rushing to help him so quickly. Paul also joins in during their celebratory drink and calls Rudeus out for the façade he’s putting up. The situation escalates, with Paul holding Rudeus by the collar and threatening him.

Later, just three members of Counter Arrow enter the guild building, and Rudeus asks if something happened. Mimir had died in the blizzard, and Sara is now missing. Filled with the urge to prove himself, Rudeus hunts through the forest to find Sara and finds just her earring.

Attacked by a monstrous tree, Rudeus finds her trapped within its trunk and gets her out safely. After healing her from the safety of a cave, she thanks him for the first time since they’ve met. He brings her back into town, where the rest of the party bursts into tears, glad Sara is still safe and well.
