The trailer for Christopher Nolan’s latest biographical film, Oppenheimer, featuring Cillian Murphy as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer is out now. Oppenheimer hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, the film follows the life and times of American theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is known for his role in the development of the world’s first nuclear weapon.
Oppenheimer is known as the Father of the Atomic Bomb for his role in the Manhattan Project during World War II, where he developed the world’s first atomic bomb as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory. The script of Oppenheimer is based on American Prometheus, a biography of the physicist written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
The upcoming film features Cillian Murphy as the eponymous physicist, along with an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman and others.
Universal Pictures recently unveiled the official trailer for Oppenheimer, introducing Cillian Murphy as the Father of the Atomic Bomb. The trailer reveals Murphy’s first look as the titular physicist and portrays his struggles to come to terms with his dangerous creation.
Like his 2000 classic Memento, Nolan explores a blend of color and black-and-white presentation in the Oppenheimer trailer. However, we’re not sure whether the black-and-white presentation is only for flashbacks or if it has some other significance.
The Oscar-nominated director also insisted on taking little to no help from CGI in creating several destructive and explosive sequences of the film, the inclusion of which is essential for a film with such a theme.
“Theory will only take you so far. I don’t know if we can be trusted with such a weapon but we have no choice.”
Most notably, Nolan recreated the infamous Trinity nuclear test using only practical effects in the film. The director described it as the most challenging sequence of his career. The trailer mostly keeps the iconic scenes under wraps but features some destructive sequences that give us a hint of what the film has in store.
The trailer also features other world-famous physicists, including Richard Feynman and Kenneth Bainbridge. Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt did not feature in the trailer. Nolan is most probably keeping their appearances a surprise.
Hopefully, Nolan will be able to deliver another critical and commercial hit after the much-appreciated Tenet.
