Murder Mystery 2 premiered on Netflix at the end of March, and the Jennifer Aniston-Adam Sandler sequel is doing quite well for its opening weekend. Not only did it appear in the top 10 list in 91 countries, but it has also set a new record at Netflix!
The mystery-comedy came out on March 31, 2023, and since its release has already achieved 42 million views and 64.42 million hours watched worldwide. Despite its low Rotten Tomatoes critics score, the sequel’s viewership stats are double than the original made in 2019.
The 2023 film features the return of the Spitzes, who are invited to the Maharajah’s wedding but are instead tangled in the affair of his kidnapping and his bodyguard’s murder. Though the married couple refers to themselves as official detectives after the first film’s events, the stakes are much higher, with a much larger suspect pool.
But how can the sequel’s viewership climb so high despite its average, if not poor, critic reviews? Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler’s involvement in both films play a huge part, as does their easy chemistry and hilarious parlay as a couple. But apart from that, I have two theories as to why Murder Mystery 2 is so popular on the streaming platform.
The funny outtakes are perfectly balanced with the intense suspense; thus, the audience feels that the film fulfils what they promise in the title and the genre. The added element of nostalgia and callbacks to the previous film also bolstered the numbers, especially since the 2019 film was also a hit among its viewers.
Several Netflix whodunnits like Knives Out, the Woman in the Window, Inside Man, and Murderville have done quite well for the mystery genre on the streaming service. With a classic who-is-the-killer plot mixed in with Anniston and Sandler’s hilarious quips and comedic timing, Murder Mystery 2 stands out.
