BioWare brought an impressive remaster of the original Mass Effect trilogy to the table with Mass Effect Legendary Edition, but also chose to leave out some beloved aspects of the original games due to the omnipresent issues of time and money. One of the biggest cuts from the new edition was multiplayer support.
Multiplayer for Mass Effect was first introduced in Mass Effect 3 and was wholeheartedly enjoyed by fans. Incidentally, it was only last week that the folks at BioWare revealed that this very multiplayer could be coming to Legendary Edition, depending on the interest levels of fans. And now, a rumor floating around on Twitter suggests that the multiplayer could arrive much sooner than expected.
According to Nick Baker, co-founder at XboxEra.com, BioWare may be announcing Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer for Mass Effect Legendary Edition at EA Play 2021, which is currently slated to be held in July. While Baker didn’t deem this as confirmed, he did note that “there’s a pretty good chance” that fans will see the multiplayer announced in two short months. As for when this mode might actually be added to the game, Baker had no other details to share.
If this does transpire, it won’t come as too much of a surprise as all initial hints at a multiplayer pointed to the one from Mass Effect 3. Additionally, fans have already made it known that the multiplayer will be more than welcome to Legendary Edition. In fact, this was an important prerequisite for BioWare to begin work on the feature.
According to longtime Mass Effect developer and Legendary Edition project director Mac Walters, the team chose to focus on single-player enhancements as including the multiplayer just couldn’t be managed. However, he also confirmed that Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer could make a return if the remaster was received well by fans and if there was a legitimate demand for multiplayer. It is clear now that BioWare is good to go on both fronts so the team can safely begin work on bringing the mode to fans.
Bringing multiplayer to the Legendary Edition would be in the best interest of BioWare as it will strengthen fan engagement with the game. And of course, fans will be over the moon too, so it’s a win-win for all parties involved. Let’s hope it’s a good iteration that fits well the remaster because let’s face it, nobody wants their fond memories of Commander Shepard from the original games ruined.
