Looking back, Mr. Osomatsu used to be one of the weirdest yet hilarious anime that aired in the early 90s.
The story about how sextuplet brothers try and fail to win over the same girl not only parodies the familial bond shared between siblings but all their futile romantic endeavors. Written by Fujio Akatsuka in the 1960s, the Osomatsu series shows us what timeless comedy looks like in 2021.
With the series rejuvenating in 2015, the hilarious tale of six brothers is here to stay.
Recently at the “Fes Matsu-san ’21” event, official sources announced that the Mr. Osomatsu franchise will receive two new anime works that will have limited screening in Japanese theatres in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The new theatrical releases will commemorate the 6th anniversary of the Mr. Osomatsu series.
The original Osomatsu-kun followed the family when the siblings were ten years old. In comparison, Mr. Osomatsu re-imagines the original manga and TV anime with the sextuplets as adults.
The reboot series features more adult-oriented humor in comparison to the original anime. However, it still retains the high-tension comedy that made the original so unique. Interestingly, though the anime was aimed at young boys, the extreme gag comedy is gaining popularity mainly among female anime fans.
Many international fans were disappointed that the new anime project will only be released in Japan. Hopefully, there is still some possibility that Crunchyroll or Viz, both of whom have rights to the digital distribution of the series, might release the anime projects worldwide.
With so many new projects announced one after the other, we can rest assured that the anime series will not be going anywhere soon. In the meantime, fans can check out gag comedies such as Aggretsuko or deadpan such as The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
Enjoy binging, and catch the theatrical release if you can!
About Mr. Osomatsu
Mr. Osomatsu is a 2015 Japanese comedy anime television series by Pierrot, based on Fujio Akatsuka’s 1962 manga series, Osomatsu-kun.
The original manga and “high tension comedy” TV anime centered on the Matsuno household, which has six naughty and mischievous sons (who are sextuplets).
All of the sextuplets, including the eldest Osomatsu, are all in love with the same girl, Totoko.
The original series followed the family when the sons were 10 years old. The new series, titled Osomatsu-san, will be the first television anime in 27 years, and it follows the characters after they’ve become adults.
