Back in April, modder Brandon Mousseau introduced us all to the Valheim VR mod. The mod allowed you to immerse yourself even further into the Norse afterlife setting of the game.
However, there was one issue: you were still required to use a mouse and keyboard to move around as Mousseau lacked the expertise to add motion controller support.
While the mod still had its highlights, the real draw of using VR is having the ability to interact with a virtual environment as if you were there in person, i.e., being able to move your head, hands, and body without using a mouse or keyboard. So, you can see why the mod wasn’t a 10/10 from an immersion perspective.
Thankfully, this is no more a concern as modder Maddy25 has brought motion controller support to Valheim VR.
The mod will now include full controls for Oculus Touch and Index controllers. Vive bindings are also a part of this motion controller support but, since those controllers have limited inputs, Mousseau and Maddy25 haven’t been able to test them to a satisfactory degree.
However, as outlined on Valheim VR’s Nexus Mods page, they are happy to accept feedback to help them fix any bugs. The page also lists helpful images that provide players with default bindings for the Oculus, Index, and HTC Vive.
The motion support also brings a few key features to Valheim, including upper-body tracking via VRIK. This gives you control over hand and finger movements.
The mod also updates controls to include the full range of motion for firing a bow and arrow, throwing a spear, or fishing. Melee attacks can be performed by equipping a weapon and swinging away or unequipping your weapons if you want to get down and dirty with hand-to-hand combat.
While all of this sounds very promising, a few things remain work-in-progress. Motion control can only be done via the joystick, so physically moving around the room won’t change your position in the game. This is the next feature that will be added to the mod in a later update.
The online multiplayer will also be a wee bit glitchy, especially if you’re playing with non-VR friends.
“If you play on a multiplayer server with non-VR players, they will see weird things like your character will have no upper-body animation, and they’ll see damage appearing in front of you when you do things like attack,”
Mousseau
Mousseau warns.
To avoid this issue, Mousseau recommends that you engage in multiplayer only with VR players or disable the mod when playing with non-VR folk.
You can check out the mod on its Nexus Mods page.
