In 2022, the US has seen a massive lift in COVID-19 restrictions since 2020’s strong pandemic curfews and prohibitions. Filmmakers and watchers breathed a sigh of relief when the theaters were back in full swing, too. But the box office has seen better days since the re-opening of the theaters.
This summer, the box office had done pretty well with films like Thor: Love and Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick, but the trend is only declining since then. Whether it be the fault of mediocre films like Lightyear or Morbius, or simply the high rise in the price of tickets, or both, it can’t be easily pointed out. The box office has taken a hit even when the pandemic is not to blame, and they have a new idea to solve that.
The Cinema Foundation, the non-profit part of the National Association of Theatre Owners, has announced a heavily discounted one-day ticket sale.
According to Variety, Jackie Brenneman, the Cinema Foundation president, announced that most theater chains and independent theaters will participate in the first country-wide sale. Tickets will be sold at the cheap price of $3 only, for one day on September 3, in celebration of National Cinema Day.
After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing. We’re doing it by offering a thank you to the moviegoers who made this summer happen and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.
National Cinema Day celebrates the love of film both moviegoers and moviemakers share—and The Cinema Foundation found a great way to honor that passion while sparking better box office profits.
This one-day event will boost the sales of films like The Invitation that have seen an average collection. But there is more exciting news! September 3 falls on Labor Day weekend and is the perfect time to drop ticket prices for all movies playing that weekend, but one special film will definitely attract more people than any other film that day.
Spider-Man: No Way Home The More Fun Stuff Version will release on September 2 in theaters with 11 minutes of extra footage from the record-breaking film. MCU fans are sure to flock to the theatres to watch the extended version with the bonus of slashed prices.
The one-day event is sure to spark the moviegoers’ interest in returning to the cinema they love and visiting the theaters to give the box office the weekend it needs to make a comeback.
