Mortal Kombat was announced to be the highest-grossing R-rated movie to be released in the pandemic. The film, a live-action reboot of the renowned ’90s video game, brings together many of the iconic fighters for a battle to win the Earthrealm.
Now within three days since its debut, the movie has become a massive success amongst audiences.
The film’s producer Todd Garner revealed on Twitter yesterday that Mortal Kombat has hit a massive achievement by becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film released during the pandemic. Check out his Tweet here:
According to Deadline, the movie made a whopping $22.5 million at the box office, which earned it the top spot in its opening weekend.
In his tweet, Garner also hinted at a sequel, stating that given the chance, they will try to make an even better follow-up with all the “constructive” criticism they’ve received.
However, the movie’s success was hanging by a thread before its release, considering Warner Bros.’s controversial plan of releasing all of their pandemic projects both on HBO Max and in theatres on the same day.
A similar concern was being harbored for Godzilla vs. Kong, which came out last month but exceeded expectations by becoming the third highest-grossing film of the year.
Movies slated for release in 2020-2021 have faced a significant slash in acquiring revenue due to the lockdowns preventing movie theatres from operating.
But with vaccination programs in course and restrictions being gradually lifted, things seem to be looking up for them.
With the Warner Bros. movies continuing to do well irrespective of being released simultaneously on both platforms, their controversial decision did indeed pay off.
Even though Mortal Kombat brought back iconic characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, it missed out on the titular tournament that is its central theme. But regardless, the movie has done well and continues to be a triumph financially.
