For all you ’90s kids, Mortal Kombat is returning, and it comes bearing surprises! The beloved series that originated from its uber-successful video game counterpart is getting a reboot. A brand-new trailer, which dropped yesterday, features the characters’ lineup, with some new additions to the film.
2021 really seems to be the year that keeps on giving. With many hit franchises releasing upcoming projects, it was only a matter of time that old favorites like Mortal Kombat joined the bandwagon.
This will be the third movie in the Mortal Kombat franchise following 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. As per the latest trailer, the cast includes Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, and Tadanobu Asano, among many others who will be playing the roles of some very famous names from the cult classic.
The story will follow the protagonist who’s born with a destiny to fight to the death in an ancient battle. Played by Lewis Tan, Cole Young is a newcomer to the franchise. Check out the trailer here:
However, the movie will not be completely similar to the games, as noted from the characters’ powers and features that differ comparatively. Sonya Blade (McNamara), who is known to fire pink projectiles in the games, seems to be completely human in the trailer.
Similarly, Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), who transforms into a dragon as his finishing move, instead seems to conjure a dragon made of fire in the upcoming movie.
The other roles include Kano, Jax Briggs, Shang Tsung, and Kung Lao, who have also been added to the plot. It also seems that Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero will be back, too, with some incredible fight sequences as well.
The Mortal Kombat films were adapted from the world-renowned action game series of the same name. A third movie had been in the works for many years, and it was finally confirmed in 2015 that James Wan would be the producer with Simon McQuoid directing it.
McQuoid, who is set to make his directorial debut with the film, was hired in 2016. The movie is scheduled to be released by HBO Max on April 16, 2021.
