After Disney acquired the rights to 20th Century’s film assets, Deadpool finally got the opportunity to enter the MCU with ease. But while Deadpool 3 will see the return of the famous Merc with a Mouth, his fiance’s return is a little shaky.
Morena Baccarin, who played Wade Wilson’s love interest Vanessa in the previous two films, addresses the possibility of her return in the third installment.
In the 2016 film, the origins of Wade Wilson’s transformation into Deadpool and his love story with Vanessa were the focus. In the 2018 sequel, though, Vanessa is killed at the beginning of the film, fueling Wade’s emotional arc in the movie.
Her death would have steeled the possibility of her return, save for a mid-credits sequence that complicated the situation.
The mid-credits scene included Wade saving Vanessa from her death. But assuming that Deadpool didn’t actually kill Ryan Reynolds in a classic fourth-wall break before he accepted the DC Green Lantern role, the mid-credits scene might not be canon.
In an interview with The Direct, Morena Baccarin disclosed that Vanessa was initially supposed to die in Deadpool 2 for good. But after the first screenings, the studio changed it “to include this timeline thing,” a “good sign” for her return.
I think when we shot the second film, I would just die. And then, after screening it a few times, they actually changed it to include this timeline thing. So I think that’s a good sign that the fans want to see her again. Whether or not it happens, it’s not up to me.
But when asked about Vanessa’s return in the first MCU R-rated film, Morena claimed she is “usually the last to find out” about these things, but she’d be open to playing Wade’s fiance again.
You know, from your lips to God’s ears, I have no idea. They’re writing the script right now. I’m usually the last to find out anything. I wish I had the information I could give you, but I really don’t. But it’d be great.
As Morena confirmed the script is being written, the third Deadpool film might get some public updates at the Disney Expo, which will commence on September 9 at Anaheim Convention Center.
For now, fans will have to appease their curiosity with the fact that Deadpool will return with his usual potty mouth and bloody antics. More updates will follow once the film reaches the production stage.
