Moon Knight is far from over. The series has resolved its Harrow, Ammit and the Zealous Cult arc, but the post credits scene has sure opened another pandora box for the MCU to explore soon.
While we wait, why not relive the magic of this show through all the songs featured in it? They say that music has the ability to transport you back in time, and with Moon Knight’s use of a soundtrack/score that is so stylish and authentic, that saying holds true.
Special thanks to director Mohamed Diab who ramped up a culturally-rich vibe to accompany Steven Grant/Marc Spector on his confusing dream-reality-altering story. Here’s your guide to all the songs used in Moon Knight:
1. Ep 01
Moon Knight’s Ep 1 predominately introduced Steven, our beloved bewildered British protagonist. So it is quite fitting to have a few iconic English songs in the mix. My favorite bit was having Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go playing as Steven was driving a cupcake van, trying to escape some very hardcore assailants.
2. Ep 02
Episode 2 returns with Steven being extremely distrustful of Marc and trying to figure out what the heck is up. Being introduced in this episode is Ahmed Saad, 3enba, and Double Zuksh’s El Melock, which you’ll hear again in the next episodes. Yes, it’s that good!
3. Ep 03
This episode’s soundtrack was not playing around! If you love discovering new music, Moon Knight is going to introduce you to a range of international artists. It’s super apt as well, as we head to Egypt in Ep 3 where all the action and mysticism demands some enthralling beats.
4. Ep 04
Right from discovering Ammit’s tomb, fighting a zombie priest, finding out that Alexander the Great is in the MCU and Marc/Steven’s apparent death, everything single moment was a rollercoaster of emotion.
To say Moon Knight Ep 4 was intense would be an understatement. This is why the soundtrack was kept low-key with a single track gracing us:
5. Ep 05
We are taken through Marc’s mind as he shows Steven his suppressed trauma. At the very end, when Marc finally reaches the Field of Reeds, we hear Más Allá Del Sol performed by Manuel Bonilla.
The song is quite significant for Marc’s journey, as the lyrics talk about finding comfort in the afterlife after facing a life full of difficulties.
6. Ep 06
We’ve come full circle! You may recall that Humperdinck’s A Man Without Love was playing during Steven’s scenes right in the first episode. For an ending that is somewhat happy, we have popular tracks from Earl Grant and Frank Sinatra accompanying it as well.
7. Trailer
Here’s the song played in the Moon Knight trailer as a bonus for you! A remixed version of this Kid Cudi song was used for the series’ main trailer, fitting the confused state of Steven’s mind perfectly.
In an interview with IGN, Diab explained how the music used in the series plays a part in rejecting stereotypes and tropes of the mainstream Egyptian portrayal in films and tv shows:
Killing those tropes, having the chance to show that… even though in the music, if you heard the songs, we have an art scene… beautiful Egyptian composer, Hesham Nazih, with this beautiful score that is Egyptian, but it’s international at its core, it’s universal.
Can’t agree more!
