Director Shares Design Pitch of the Two Moon Knight Suits

In an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Moon Knight director Mohamed Diab recently opened up about designing the two costumes for the hero.

The director also revealed that he pitched in with a whopping 200-page pitch script, covering everything from the location to the tone, the score, and more.

Oscar Isaac plays the lead as Moon Knight, the hero is one of the personalities of Steven Grant/Marc Spector, who has a dissociative personality disorder. The actor dons two superhero costumes in the show, and the director finally opened up the process of designing it.

Mohamed revealed that the costumes were swapped for Moon Knight and the soon-to-be-introduced Mr. Knight.

Ironically, we started with Steven having Moon Knight and Marc having Mr. Knight, ironically, but that’s one of the best thing about taking your time and developing things. You start realizing no, no, no, this costume is for this guy. This is what works for them. And we realize what’s the logic.

The director then explained how the suits came into being and what they signify. A suit is a superhero’s most valuable asset—it inspires them to do good under a veil of secrecy and becomes their identity. It isn’t easy to design one.

The logic should be that each one of them inspires his suit. So, the suit is inspired by who you are, or what you love, or what’s your imagination of a suit. That’s why Steven who’s completely away from the superhero world, his cool thing is when they tell him summon the suit, it’s a suit. It’s an almost Armani suit. So it made sense. But I loved that he had two suits and the one that we worked even more on was the Moon Knight suit.

Mohamed even shared his inhibitions with the white suit but said that Oscar made it better.

And on the other hand, as a director, I was scared a lot more from Mr. Knight’s suit because a white suit like that could look so bad on camera. And it could be silly and it could be weird. But ironically, the moment Oscar stepped in, we felt… it’s very cool. And we actually try to think of moments that we can expand it even more.

Moreover, the director shared that he and his wife, who currently works as the producer on Moon Knight, presented a 200-page pitch. He shared that they had covered everything and were confident in winning it.

“The moment we were done with the pitch, we looked at each other and I told her, “Sarah, we’re going to get that job, or something is wrong with the world.”

Mohamed’s expertise in filming Egyptian movies gives Moon Knight an upper hand in bringing something entirely different from what Marvel is used to.

Meanwhile, the audience will see much more of the costumes when Moon Knight returns with Episode 3 on April 13.
