Marvel Didn’t Say No to Anything for ‘M.O.D.O.K.’: Patton Oswalt

M.O.D.O.K. creator Patton Oswalt says that Marvel didn’t say no to anything for the show at all.

In a recent interview with Comic Book:

They didn’t refuse us anything, which created its own problems because then we were like a dog chasing a car like, ‘Oh, now we have this thing. We can’t screw it up.’ So they gave us characters to work with it but like we had better hit the side of the park because they just, they gave us the rope. I don’t want to hang ourselves here.

However, fellow showrunner Jordan Blum said they wanted to use Stilt-Man in a hilarious sequence at Marvel’s infamous Bar With No Name.

But they were denied the character by the legal team at Marvel. In fact, Stilt-Man and Paste-Pot Pete were the only two times Blum and his room were told no.

Marvel was so cool about like, ‘Yeah you want Iron Man? Yeah, take Iron Man.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God I can’t believe, Iron Man!’ Like the only characters, they said no to were like Stilt-Man and Paste-Pot Pete we tried to have in that episode.

Animated by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (the same studio responsible for Robot Chicken), M.O.D.O.K. is a stop-motion animated adult comedy series from Marvel Television, a studio that became non-functional in December 2019.

The Hulu series follows its main character, M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), after he is removed from his position as the head of an evil organization, AIM, for years of incompetence in the fight against Earth’s strongest heroes.

The series is created by comedian Patton Oswalt, who also voices the titular character.

While M.O.D.O.K. features Marvel characters, including cameos from Wonder Man, Iron Man, and more, it is not set within the MCU. Jon Hamm and Nathan Fillion will also lend their voices for cameo appearances.

M.O.D.O.K. is already drawing comparisons to Robot Chicken, not only because they are animated by the same studio, but also because of its easygoing superhero humor that is directed more towards adults.

Hulu broadcasted a trailer for Season 1 late last month that provided plenty of laughs and even teased M.O.D.O.K. venturing to Thor’s home planet of Asgard.

However, M.O.D.O.K. may not be the last time Oswalt works with Marvel. The showrunner has voiced an interest in bringing the character into the live-action realm of the MCU.

For Marvel fans waiting for another series to fill the vacuum left after the end of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and before Loki arrives in June, M.O.D.O.K. may be coming at a perfect time.

The 10-episode first season arrives on Hulu on May 21.
