Modern warfare 2’s SMS verification for PC players only

During Overwatch 2’s login process, players had to attach their phone number to their accounts to play the game which frustrated a lot of players. As for Modern Warfare 2, players have to go through this step again but this time, it’s only for PC players.

PC players will have to go through the same SMS text message verification process, that angered Overwatch 2 players, for playing MW 2 but there’s an exception. Existing Warzone players who have already verified their accounts won’t be required to go through that step again.

Team Ricochet, Activision’s anti-cheat team for Call of Duty mentioned that players who will play Modern Warfare 2 on Steam will require a mobile number linked to their Steam account.

the developers said in a blog post on Thursday. The studio stated that this security requirement thwarts “illicit account creation at its source.”

This Battle.net SMS policy for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 is the same as the verification requirement for the first Warzone for PC back in May 2020.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer

Team Ricochet additionally mentioned that the SMS verification requirement was implemented in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), earlier this year, after discovering that cheaters were using the game client to bypass the SMS verification step to play Warzone.

Blizzard implemented this same SMS requirement for Overwatch 2 but received intense backlash from players, which later led them to remove this step from the game. Players were rightfully frustrated as those with prepaid cell phone plans couldn’t access the game.

Console players won’t have to worry about this step as it is required to be done exclusively by PC players. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.
