Sometimes all you need is to curl up in your bed with a cozy blanket and watch something that’s just the right blend of wholesome, hopeful yet realistic. Modern Love Season 2 is all that and more. An anthology of eight tales that rediscover the various nuances of people, relationships, and love!
If you’ve watched the first season you know what’s in store for you. So before you start bingeing this season, get everything you need – A box of tissues, a tub of ice cream or maybe a companion too.
If you haven’t, well what are you waiting for! Although, since both seasons are anthologies and each story is different you can start from anywhere.
Alright, let’s jump into the review or should I say ‘fall’!
Quick Review
Modern Love
Air Date: October 18, 2019 Status: Upcoming Season 2 Studio: Amazon Studios, Storied Media Group, Picrow No. of Seasons: 2 No. of Episodes: 16Modern Love Season 2 is a must-watch for people who like slice-of-life tales and want a dose of pleasant moments, hope, and sheer warmth! Each story is pretty unique from the other and beautifully depicts the nuances of different kinds of relationships.
Is It Worth Watching
Absolutely! You’ll love it more than 3000. The stories in Modern Love explore so many themes, such as finding your sexuality as a teen, falling in love with a person again after many years, breakups, nostalgia, and so much more.
The beauty of this season is not just the range of stories but how well they’re explored. Nothing seems too forced. The writers know well that not every relationship has to end in the stereotypical happy ending. Sometimes, a happy ending for two people can mean something more than just a happily ever after.
Plot
Based on the New York Times column of the same name, the film tells eight different stories about characters from various walks of life. I think season 2 explores a slightly different way of screenplay writing.
The tonality is pretty much the same as the previous season, but the way those stories are told has a subtle wit. The train scene between Kit Harrington and Lucy Boynton’s character and how there’s a callback to the fan-favorite Before Trilogy.
The scene where Tobias Menzes’ character says how he just spent an amazing night with the love of life, and the woman is someone he used to be married to.
I think the only plot that was somewhat underwhelming was that of the two childhood friends. This isn’t because of the ending, but even through the entire episode, it just seemed a little less convincing than the other episodes. But the rest were great.
What makes the series even better is that most tales don’t have a solidified, fool-proof ending. They’re open-ended, left to the viewer’s imagination with just a tiny tinge of hope. And I guess that’s all that makes a difference. No matter how these characters’ lives unfold, at that moment, there’s just a little bit of hope that can get them going.
I. Cast And Characters
Season 2 includes Gbenga Akinnagbe, Lucy Boynton, Minnie Driver, Kit Harington, Garrett Hedlund, Anna Paquin, Jack Reynor, Miranda Richardson, Tobias Menzes, and Sophie Okonedo, among others!
Every character was spot on, and the way the actors portrayed them was pretty realistic. The chemistry, which is rather important with stories like these, really came through!
One of my favorite characters was that of Minni Driver’s from the first story. The way she portrayed grief, nostalgia, and so many other emotions, was beautiful yet realistic.
Final Thoughts And Grade
I think I’ve said enough good things about the show. Hopefully enough for you to watch it, because it truly is beautiful. Not just for hopeless romantics or people who believe in soul mates, but for anyone who likes good slice-of-life stories that depict seemingly real human emotions and connections.
