MGM has hired Misha Green to be the director of the sequel of the 2018 Tomb Raider film, starring Alicia Vikander. Green’s last big project was HBO Max’s weirdly sinister Lovecraft Country, for which she was a developer and a director. However, Tomb Raider 2 will be her feature film directorial debut. She will also pen the script for the movie.
The 2018 Tomb Raider movie, directed by Roar Uthag, restarted the franchise once again, after Angelina Jolie’s version from the early 2000s. The films are based on the video game series of the same name, which features Lara Croft, an intelligent and athletic archaeologist, as the protagonist.
Although Tomb Raider’s plot was generally panned, the film raked in $275 million and was considered a box office success. Alicia Vikander’s performance as Lara Croft was praised, and the sequel will have her returning to the role. Not much is known about the plot of the second film but it is sure to up the stakes in terms of Lara Croft’s adventure.
Those who have watched Lovecraft Country will know Misha Green’s ability to adapt spooky story arcs for the screen. Here’s hoping that she brings her charm to the Tomb Raider franchise. The director herself seemed pretty excited about the opportunity. Check out her tweet below:
What do you think? Which game will Tomb Raider 2 be based on?
