Microsoft will not be talking about their plan for Windows at Build 2021 this week, as the company is planning to detail the future of the PC operating system separately. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, gave us this teaser during his Build keynote earlier this morning. He also stated that he has been testing the “next generation” of Windows in recent months.

Microsoft has also been working on an entirely new app store for Windows and some significant UI changes for the operating system. Nadella references the store changes, promising to unlock a better economy for the developers and creators within Windows itself.
We assume this will bring some changes to the Windows Store, giving developers the option to submit any Windows application, including browsers such as Firefox and Chrome. Rumors state that Microsoft may even allow third-party commerce platforms within the apps, so developers would be able to bypass Microsoft’s 15% commission on apps and 12% commission on games.
It is interesting to note that Nadella called it the “next generation of Windows” rather than just, say, Windows 11. This may mean that the update could be a significant shift for Windows branding, rather than just a UI refresh.
Microsoft had confirmed the previous week that Windows 10X, the OS specifically built for dual-screen devices, will no longer be shipped. The tech giant is now planning to bring the best aspects of Windows 10X to the main version of Windows 10 instead. We can expect to see some significant changes to Windows 10 UI under something codenamed “Sun Valley”.
Some of that work is already noticeable with new system icons, File Explorer improvements, and the end of the Windows 95 style icons. Microsoft is also looking to improve the basic foundation of Windows, bringing fixes for a rearranging apps issue on multiple monitors, the addition of the Xbox Auto HDR feature, and improvements to Bluetooth audio support.
The CEO also said that we could expect to hear more about the future of Windows “very soon”, hinting that we will be getting some kind of announcement in the coming weeks.
