We all knew that My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission would break records in the US, but we didn’t expect it to be so soon. The global hype for anime is real, especially in the US, and franchises like MHA and Demon Slayer have proved it fair and square.
World Heroes’ Mission was one of the most anticipated films of 2021, and it delivered beyond our expectations. We got to see some fantastic new characters along with our favorites who got some major power-ups in both skills and their quirks.
After breaking records in Japan, the film made its way to the North American region to do the same. Needless to say, the film is in a neck-to-neck competition with many American blockbusters right now.
My Hero Academia The Movie: World Heroes’ Mission premiered in the US on October 29 and reached the #2 spot on its opening day. The film earned a whopping US$2,882,381 on its debut.
The anime film is right below the sci-fi film Dune that has the world shaken, and it’s honestly commendable for an Asian film to be competing with such films. According to Box Office Mojo, World Heroes’ Mission has earned more than the iconic James Bond’s latest film, No Time to Die.
To go this far and hold its own against iconic hits featuring global superstars is a remarkable feat in itself. The pandemic may have been bad for many reasons, but it introduced the world to anime and manga’s hidden gem.
Moreover, World Heroes’ Mission earned significantly more than the franchise’s previous films, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising and Two Heroes.
Similarly, Demon Slayer’s Mugen Train broke records in the US to an extent we couldn’t fathom.
Funimation also announced that it would be releasing a 76-page manga booklet titled My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission Vol. W Specialty Manga Booklet. The booklet will be given to theatergoers on its opening weekend.
Anime films have been gaining a lot of attention and popularity from the US and other countries as well. Sites like Funimation and Crunchyroll now stream anime in more than just English and Japanese, indicating how much this form of media has been growing.
I am happy about this as it will open various opportunities for the industry and those who create the content for us.

About My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia is a Japanese superhero manga series written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi. It has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 2014, with its chapters additionally collected in 37 tankōbon volumes as of February 2023.
It follows a quirkless boy Izuku Midoriya and how he backed the greatest Hero alive. Midoriya, a boy who has been admiring heroes and their ventures since the day he was born, came into this world without a quirk, where almost everybody is born with one.
