Ewan McGregor was coy when he was asked about a possible appearance from a young Luke Skywalker in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Initially announced in 2019, Obi-Wan Kenobi will be one of many Disney+ live-action Star Wars series to premiere after season 2 of The Mandalorian came to an end in December 2020. Deborah Chow (who directed two episodes of The Mandalorian) has been tapped to steer the upcoming Obi-Wan series.
Much of season 2 was well-received amongst critics and fans. However, the final episode featured a controversial cameo from a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, which left a sour taste in many fans’ mouths.
In a recent interview by THR, MacGregor answered sheepishly when asked about the casting of a young Luke Skywalker. Although filming for the Obi-Wan series has not yet begun, McGregor said he has done a few screen tests with Chow and he can tell “she is a really, really good director.” When inquired if any of his screen tests were with an actor portraying a young Luke Skywalker, McGregor smiled and said, “That’s very possible. I don’t know.”
Although plot details are being kept tightly under wraps since production has been delayed numerous times. Nevertheless, there have been a few exciting announcements along the way. It was announced during Disney Investor Day 2020, that Hayden Christensen will be returning as Darth Vader.
Much of the cast for the Obi-Wan series has been revealed. Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse will be reprising their roles as Luke’s adoptive parents Owen and Beru Lars. However there has been no word on who will play young Luke. Since he will be about 10 years old in the series, digitally de-aging (as seen in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian) will not be a reasonable option.
The Obi-Wan series reportedly sent out a casting call last year for a “precocious” boy and girl ages 8-11, apparently to play a young Luke and Leia. Photos from the set also seem to suggest that Obi-Wan will visit the Lars family homestead in the upcoming series. Perhaps a young Luke will appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, McGregor is possibly not yet allowed to share any plot details.
