Stranger Things star Maya Hawke, who plays Robin in the much-loved Netflix series, recently addressed the possible return of Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson in Season 5.
Eddie Munson was introduced in Season 4 and quickly became a fan-favorite. In the season finale, he won several hearts for his legendary act of sacrificing his life to save the others.
Eddie’s last performance as a guitarist was with Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”, though it broke our hearts that it was his final act. Eddie’s death definitely made fans extremely upset.
The Duffer Brothers also indicated that Eddie’s death is final and permanent, and he would not be returning. However, fans have not given up the hope of him returning in Season 5.
In a conversation with NME, Maya Hawke explained that though she gets why fans love Eddie, it would not be a good idea for him to return. Here’s what she said:
I totally sympathize with fans who want to see more of him… I feel like we can’t keep killing people and bringing them back to life—the same fans would be so annoyed! But I would love them to find a way to have Eddie’s ghost in the mix, just because Joe Quinn is such an awesome guy. He’s so much fun to have on set and such a great actor.
The idea of Eddie returning as a ghost is not a new idea. Joseph Quinn himself had expressed his desire to return to Season 5 in a supernatural form to communicate with his friend Dustin.
Fan theories suggest that Vecna might resurrect Eddie as a zombie to make him one of his soldiers. Considering the supernatural premise of Stranger Things, this isn’t such a crazy idea.
However, Maya Hawke makes a valid point that the series cannot keep bringing back dead characters.
In fact, Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven in the series, also criticized the Duffer Brothers for being “Sensitive Sallies” and not killing off any major character.
Stranger Things fans seem to be particularly sensitive to death. Even minor characters such as Barb are mourned years after their death. Let’s see if that fact affects any plans the Duffer Brothers might have for Eddie.
Till then, you can watch Stranger Things on Netflix.
